# Auto-end and recording limits

> The Earmark desktop app ends recordings when your meeting does, using only microphone activity. See supported apps, requirements, and the 3-hour limit.

## What it does

Forgot to hit stop? The desktop app ends a recording on its own once the meeting is over, so it doesn't keep capturing the next meeting or the hallway chat after it.

Auto-end notices when you're done in your meeting app, the moment Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, or another meeting app stops using your microphone. There's nothing to set up: it runs automatically on every desktop recording.

  **Nothing extra is ever recorded.** Auto-end only checks *whether* a meeting app is using your microphone. It never records, listens to, or saves audio from your meeting apps. It sees activity, not content.

## When a recording ends

A desktop recording stops when any of these happens:

| **The meeting wraps up**             | Earmark follows your calendar to know when a meeting should end, and pays attention to the conversation too. If the meeting runs long, it keeps recording until you're actually done. |

| **Your computer goes to sleep**      | Closing the lid ends the recording cleanly instead of leaving it hanging.                                                                                                             |

Recordings that aren't tied to a calendar event, like [Quick Capture](/using-earmark/toolbar#quick-capture), end once the conversation is over.

When a recording ends, Earmark saves the transcript and finishes your artifacts, just as if you had clicked **Stop capture** yourself.

## Supported meeting apps

Auto-end recognizes calls in:

* Zoom
* Google Meet in Chrome
* Microsoft Teams
* Slack huddles
* Discord
* FaceTime
* Webex, RingCentral, and GoTo Meeting

## Requirements

* The Earmark desktop app, version **1.8.0** or later, on Mac or Windows
* On a Mac, macOS **14.2** or later

The web app doesn't end recordings automatically. Click **Stop capture** when your meeting is done.

## Recording limits

A single capture session runs for up to **3 hours**, on desktop and web.

1. At 2.5 hours, Earmark shows a **Meeting time approaching limit** notice, so the end never catches you by surprise.
2. At 3 hours, capture stops and Earmark finishes your artifacts.

To keep going, click **Start capture** in the same meeting. The transcript continues in that meeting, and the new session gets another 3 hours. You can do this as many times as you need for workshops and all-day sessions.

## If a recording ends too early

Click **Start capture** in the meeting to pick up where you left off. Everything captured so far stays in the meeting.
